According to a Richmond Times-Dispatch article by Tony Farrell, published Oct. 8, 2018, Roy Proctor "studied fiction writing at the University of Iowa under the tutelage of legendary author Philip Roth and took the same play-writing course that Tennessee Williams had taken 25 years earlier..." Additionally, for the last 28 of his years as Richmond's theater critic, he published The Phoebe List, to recognize his favorite performances of the year. As the article notes, Phoebe was "the Proctor family's high-strung black poodle." On May 14, 2020, the Richmond Times-Dispatch ran another piece by Tony Farrell to report on Proctor's death.
