    He became a director and playwright following his retirement.

    According to a Richmond Times-Dispatch article by Tony Farrell, published Oct. 8, 2018, Roy Proctor "studied fiction writing at the University of Iowa under the tutelage of legendary author Philip Roth and took the same play-writing course that Tennessee Williams had taken 25 years earlier..."     That same article, written to announce he was receiving the Richmond Theatre Legacy Award, indicated he wrote more than 3,500 theater reviews, 2,000+ film reviews, and two regular theater columns. Additionally, for the last 28 of his years as Richmond's theater critic, he published The Phoebe List, to recognize his favorite performances of the year. As the article notes, Phoebe was "the Proctor family's high-strung black poodle."

    He married Sarah Franks, a college classmate. Together they had a daughter, Anna, and a son, Joe.

    The article also indicated burial would be alongside his father, Joseph Roy Proctor Sr., in Thomasville City Cemetery, and memorial contributions be directed to the Richmond Triangle Players.

    A celebration of life was pending the easing of restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
