  1. 1.  Fritz, Hans Ulrich was born about 1708 in Germany.

    Notes:

    Name: Hans George Fritz
Memo: Found on the Captain's List for the ship "Elizabeth". The ship arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania prior to 30 Oct 1738.
    Name: Hans Uhllerick Fritz
Memo: This was an autograph duplicate of List that contained Hans Ulrich Fritz.
Found in a list that contained all the names of males above sixteen, who were required to repeat and subscribe to the Declaration of Allegiance with their own hand if they could do so and if they could not, their names were written by a clerk and they made their mark

Thought to be originally from the Rhine-Palatine area of Germany, the father, Hans Ulrich Fritz, aged 30 and his son Wooldrich (Frederick) Fritz, aged 7, arrived in Philadelphia abt 1738 on the ship "Elizabeth" from Holland. Moving to the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, Wooldrich married Janet and fathered at least 3 children. After 1763 the family relocated to the Lexington, NC area where 3 more children were born.
In 1781 Wooldrich served as Private in Major General Nathanael Greene's Army and fought his last battle at the Guilford Courthouse alongside his sons, George (1753) and John (1762), and his friend and neighbor, Valentine Leonard and his son Jacob. When this unit was partially disbanded, the friends returned home to their neighboring farms. On November 2, 1781, Valentine and Wooldrich were both attacked and shot at their homes by a band of Tories, Woodrich dying immediately and Valentine dying 11 days later. These 2 friends and battle comrades are buried in what was known as Leonhardt's Church Cemetery and is now Pilgrim Reformed Church Cemetery on Old Pilgrim Road.

The tall monument was erected 4 July 1896 for the 2 men who lost their lives so cruely after doing so much for their country and their community:
The inscription on the East Side reads: "This monument was erected by citizens A.D. 1896 out of veneration for our brave dead. These men are of those who fought for and gained our liberty. Unveiled with appropriate ceremonies July 4, 1896."
The West Side reads: "The heroes buried in this spot were cruelly assasinated in their own homes by Tories near the close of the Revolutionary War. They were Patriots and bravely fought for American independence."

The original soapstone marker for Wooldrich reads: "W. F. Wooldrick Frits, deceased November the second, 1781, age 50 yrs. Remember me as you pass by; As you are now, so once was I; As I am now, so must you be; Prepare therefore to follow me." On his footstone: "Lo, here doth lifeless Wooldrick lie, cut off by murder's cruelty."

  1. 2.  Fritz, Wooldrich Frederich Descendancy chart to this point (1.Hans1) died in 1782 in North Carolina, United States.

    Notes:

    Name: Wooldrich Frederich Frits
First knowledge of Wooldrich is through a legal document in Augusta County, Virginia on March 21, 1759, when William McGee is summoned to pay freedom dues to his late servant Frederick Frits. Also on that same day, William McGee is to pay freedom dues to his late servant Janet Frits, wife of Frederick Frits.” Wooldrich would have been about twenty-seven years of age when he received his "freedom dues" from William McGee, it is our opinion that he and his wife, Janet indentured themselves to obtain money in order to establish the family in the Shenandoah valley.” (Records of Augusta Co., VA, 1745-1800, pp. 235—236.)

Hans Ulrich and Wooldrich (Frederick) Fritz are found listed as father and son in the Charlotte Observer Newspaper article, Five Generations In One N.C. Family ”Shot" At One Sitting, the photograph included William Fritz (1843) and members of his family. The article was written by Rev. Jacob C. Leonard, D.D., and appeared on Sunday, August 21, 1932. It indicated that Wooldrich arrived in America on the ship "Elizabeth" at the Port of Philadelphia. We have found that Hans Ulrich Fritz was listed as the father of Wooldrich Fritz in the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) records Nos. 269266 and 539883, for Wooldrich Fritz and George Fritts, Sr., respectively. Also, that George, Sr. was the son of Wooldrich. It has and is taken for fact from this article, from Port of Philadelphia shipping records for 1738, and from an affidavit written by William Fritz in 1929, that Hans and Wooldrich were father and son. It is presumed that Rev. Jacob C. Leonard, D.D. received his material, from Wooldrich's grandson William Fritz (1843) who was discussed in the article.

Wooldrich married FRITZ, Janet about 1752 in Rowan County, North Carolina, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Generation: 3

  1. 3.  Fritts, George Sr. Descendancy chart to this point (2.Wooldrich2, 1.Hans1) was born in 1753 in Shenandoah County, Virginia, British America; died in Mar 1845; was buried on 29 Mar 1845 in Davidson County, North Carolina, USA.

    Notes:

‘G’ GEORGE FRITTS, first known son of Wooldrich and Janet (_?__) Fritz (1731), b. 1753, Shenandoah Co., VA; d. Mar or Apr 1845, and was buried on the Saturday before Easter, age 92y, Pilgrim Reformed Church Cem., Davidson Co., NC. No tombstone marker has been located there for him. However, in 1976, the Church put a marker up to him and several other men who fought in of the Revolutionary War. As a young boy George moved to Rowan Co., NC with his parents, where he was living at the outbreak of the Revolutionary War.
George was a member of the Pilgrim Reformed Church of which
Rev. Samuel Suther was pastor. He was an intense Patriot and
preached from the pulpits in favor of our American independence. The long list of members who served from this church will testify to the intensity and success of his sermons. George served on four different occasions for a total of sixteen months.
    - He was first drafted and served five months in the Militia in 1776, against the Cherokee Indians. He served under Captain Robert Moore, Major James Smith, and General Rutherford;
    - Secondly he served as a volunteer for five months under Capt. Lopp, Col. Lyfle and General Rutherford and marching with the militia into South Carolina and Georgia. During this service while Ln.Georgia he fought at the Battle of Briar Creek. against the British when General Ash was defeated in Mar 1779;
    - He was again drafted c1780 and served three months under Capt. Lopp as a light horseman; and,
    - Lastly, Capt. Lopp drafted him and he served three months in the Spring 1781, and fought the Tories under Captain Lopp. The Tories were groups of people living in America who were loyal to England
George, Sr. (1753), md. Mary Wilson on 3 Jan 1780, Rowan Co., NC, with Rowland Jenldns as bondsman and John Kerr as wit. Mary was b. c1759, and still living in 1840. However, she died before George wrote his Will on 10 Jun 1844, as he stated “...having no wife”. Who her parents were is unclear. She was a sister of John Wilson, Sr., (c1750), whose son John Wilson, Jr. (1785) married her and George Fritts’ (1753) dau. Mary of 1784. There are two or more entirely different Wilson families living in or near Rowan Co. Part of OUR Wilson’s traveled to Ashe/Watauga Co., NC,and part of the family stayed in what is today Davidson Co., NC.
    George, along with his mother, Janet "Jennett" Fritz was the Administrators of the Estate of Wooldrich “Frederick” Fritz, his father;
the estate did not go to Court until May and August, 1783 and no inventory was listed.
As of this time, we have not been able to find a deed to Wooldrich's land——however, the land George Fritts received as State Grant #615 on October 10, 1783 was NOT his fathers‘ as we stated in Volume I. Wooldrich's land was obtained by son John (1763).
George Fritz received State Grant #615 on 10 Oct 1783, for 150 acres next to John Lopp, Michael Younder, and Valentine Leonard and he was living on it at the time of his death. In the 1790 census we find George Frits (p. 173)with nine people in his household. It is our thought, but, by no means proven, that George's mother, Janet and sister, Jean were living with him and his wife, Mary and five of their eleven children born by 1790 census.
George was evidently a successful farmer and owned several tracts of land, well over 700 acres, including the Beard's Mill with 253 acres he purchased in 1815, which became the Frittz Mill. Much of the land was located on Abbotts Creek within what today is Lexington, NC. The grist—millthat George owned was considered a necessity for each community, in order to grind the wheat ir1to flour for each family's needs. Each farmer would bring his wheat to the mill. Often "going to mill" meant an all day trip or often staying overnight until the wheat was ground and ready to go home.
A Bible for George and Mary has not been found to document the children's ages, but from tombstones, census, and individual child's Bible records it appears that George listed in his Will his five daus. in order of birth and also his five sons—but did not list the youngest son, William, as he had already received his inheritance."
Abstract of the Will of George Fritts, Sen. (WBK1:462). Written 10 Jun 1844. Probated May 1845. “Having no wife I desire that my grist & saw mills with all the land I bought with the mills (after my son Reuben gets his part where he now lives) to be sold & the profits from sale are to be divided into seven shares. My two sons Reuben and Joseph each are to have one share and the other five shares are to go to myfive daughters: Rachael, Mary, the body heirs of Hannah, deceased, Sarah and Catherine. All my personal estate is to be sold and the proceeds divided between my above mentioned daughters. My sons John, Adam, George, Reuben, and Joseph have each had their firll share of land property and personal property and are to have no more, except Reuben and Joseph as stated above. Exec: Two sons Reuben and Joseph. Wit: George Thomason, Sen., Wm. McRary, Jun. and John Thomason.
While writing his Will, George, Sr., did not list his youngest son, William (1795). However, Gail (Fritts) Fritts of Lexington, NC in 1982, researched and provided the follow land deeds:
Firsts, ”This indenture made this 17th day of June AD one thousand Eight hundred and thirty seven [1837] between George Fritz Sen. of Davidson County State of North Carolina of the one part and his son WilliamFritz of the County and State aforesaid. William Fritz paying unto each of the said George Fritz five Daughters or their heirs the sum of twenty dollars within two years after the Decease of the said George F ritz,.. ” (This deed was registered 4 Sep 1838, Davidson Co., Deed Book 6, pp. 375-377, there was 103 acres located on Abbotts Creek with grist mill in this deal).
Secondly, "This indenture made this the twentyfirst day of July in the year of our Lord One thousand Eight hundred and fifty four [I854], between William F ritts, George Byerly and wife Katy, Sarah F ritts, John Wilson and wife Mary Wilson and also Eliza Sink, Mary Dancy and Omy Dancy (the latter three heirs of Hannah Dancy deed.) and James Perdue. " James Perdue paid $5.00 to each of the above named heirs of George Fritz (I 753) in
consideration for seventy acres of land located on the waters of Flat Swamp, adjoining James Elliott and others. ”
If William ever paid the $20.00 in the first deed, we do not know. Why James Perdue was paying each of the daughters and William $5.00 in 1854, we also do not know. However, the important thing is that we can determine from these deeds that Rachel was still living in 1845, but not mentioned in the 1854 document. It appears that Hannah was living in 1837, but died before her father’s Will was written on 10 Jun 1844 and prob. May 1845.
According to a letter written on 5 Jul 1845, by Jacob and Susanna (Byerly) Leonard (1789) of Davidson Co., NC, to their son and dau. in-law, George and Mary (Wilson) Leonard in Putnam Co., Indiana, "....I will inform you of the death which has been since we last rate to you, one was our nigh neighbor old Mr. George Fritts he was bered Saturday before ester he was confined to his bed some five or six weeks before he died, but all a counts he was between ninety and one hundred years of age...." [spelling is as it was written]. This means that George cl.in Mar or Apr 1845, age ninety-one or ninety-two.
The gravestone of George Fritts, Sr. (1753) was evidently destroyed over the years. In 1977, the Pilgrim Reformed (United Church of Christ) Church put up a beautiful gravestone to five Revolutionary War Soldiers buried in "God's Acre" but whose markers can no longer be found. George was one of the five listed.
George and Mary had eleven n_otten children as was recorded in The Fritts (Fritz) Family Heritage, Vol.I, 1979.
As of this writing we have little on Rachel or Hannah. Sarah was living with her parents in the 1840 census and in the 1850 census, she was with two of her nephews, sons of brother Joseph. Sarah d. 10 Jun 1856, age 65y 9m and bur. Pilgrim Reformed Church Cem., next to her brother George Fritts, Jr. (1788) who d. four days before her.
To give the reader a feel of the conditions in Davidson Co., NC in the summer of 1845, Jacob and Susanna (Byerly) Leonard (1789), wrote: ”...after wating nine years to come se us that you will hit a hard time to come. this fall for it semes like if ther won ’t be any com made this year if the drouth continue much longer
“The corn is they smallest for they tim of year I most ever saw and we need not wonder why it is so small for we havent had any rain to stop plowing since we soode out oats. They like has never been nown in this contry so before. Wheat crop ware good we made four hundred and fifty dozen of wheat this year We made the shortest crop of oats we ever had. The oats were so short that it couldent be bound at places. The people are going to river mills to get grinding and if it keep dry much longer it will be hard getin it there but we dont wont you to let this skear you and not comefor we only state this so you may no how times are in this contry.
I will now let you no the prices of produce, the price of wheat is from sixty two and half to seventyfive per bushel, corn is worth from forty five to fifty cents were bushel and is skears at that, old corn will
hunt-close this years, bacon is selling from eight to ten cents per pound and all other produce in propotion. Horses and cattle are low and no demand at that, the cattle are ding with they distemper a good deal this year, we havent lost any as yet but they are ding close around us, Adam and George Fritts has lost some of their cattle so this keeps the price of cattle low and horses wont sell at tall this years for none wants to by. Wehave nine head of horses with the colts and I dont now what we will have to feed them on this year if we dont make a goodeal of corn for we cant hardly give one away let alone tring to sell..... ” As written!
Mr. David Thomas Fritts, Sr. (1859), son of Alfred, grandson of Joseph (c1794) and great-grandson of George Fritts, answered questions for his son Grady Fritts about his memories of the Fritts Family. “. . .My great grandfather was George—my uncle said he was a general muster. Heard people tell they didn’t know which was the whitest his shirt or his beard.”
“One day John Wagoner said there stands old George Fritts. He [John] came up to granddaddy and granddaddy flattened him. Granddaddy cut him a hickory stick. The first time he knocked him down with his fist. People’ held John back. Granddaddy said “Let him come.” I’ll knock him down and he’ll not get up...” We know that George died near Easter 1845, age about 92y and that he would have been remembered by many people when Mr. D.T. was growing up. So we can determine that George was an elderly man who did not like to be referred to as “old”, that he was strong and took no gruff from others; and he had a long white beard.”

    Notes:

    Name:
JOHN FRITTS, SR., second known son of Wooldrich and Janet (__?_) Fritz (1731), b. 1762, Shenandoah Co., VA. As far as he knew there was no record that indicated the month and day of his birth [Military Records John Fritz, Private, NC, #S10701]. As a very small child his family moved to Rowan (now Davidson) Co., North Carolina, settling near what today is the town of Lexington.

At age nineteen, John joined the North Carolina military, as a
Private under Captain John Lopp. This company of Rangers marched through Rowan County and the surrounding countryside searching for Tories and spying on the movements of the British, who were at this time heavily in the South. John fought at the Battle of Guilford Court House in Guilford Co., North Carolina on 15 Mar 1781 with his father, Wooldrich, and several of the Leonard’s, Wilson’s, and others of the Lexington area. The battle began with a formation of three American lines, the first consisting of North Carolina Militia.

The fierce battle continued for two and one half-hours, but the British were just too much for the Americans. Even though the Americans lost the battle, the British suffered greatly with a loss of nearly 600 while the colonists suffered only about half as many casualties.

Shortly after this battle John was discharged. In the summer of 1782, John re-enlisted in the service as a volunteer under Captain Peter Fost (Foush) for the purpose of guarding British and Tory prisoners who had been taken in South Carolina and brought to Salisbury for safe keeping. After a period of time at Salisbury, the British prisoners were taken toward Guilford Court House, but John remained as a guard over the Tories until relieved of service.

After the war John spent the next several years living in
North Carolina and Virginia. John Sr. received a 50-acre land
warrant from Virginia as early as 1782 but he did not cash it in for some twenty-eight and one-half years. John Sr. purchased two tracts of land in North Carolina. The first on 18 May 1789, land grant (#1794) from North Carolina for 260 acres located on Abbotts Creek next to Michael Zink (Sinks), Frederick Smith, Valentine Beard, and John Avery.

Sometime after this, John returned to Virginia, where on 9
Jan 1791, he md. Mary Beaver in Rockingham Co., VA, by Rev.
Paul Henkel, with Mathias Beaver as the bondsman. At the time of their marriage John was age c29y and Mary was age c32y.

From 1791 to 1808, when Mary would have been c49y, there were ten children born to this union. How long they stayed in Virginia is not definite at this time.

John is found to have traveled between North Carolina and
Virginia on several occasions. He was in Virginia in 1788,
according to the militia "Vouchers" of Captain Josiah Harrison's Company #9, Tenth Legion, of Rockingham County. He was listed there in June 1792, same militia, Company #8, East District.

The Tenth Legion was a small hamlet on the "great road" located shortly after entering Rockingham County from Shenandoah County.

The censuses for Virginia in 1790 and 1800 were evidently destroyed in 1814, when the British burned Washington, D.C., Thus we have not been able to locate John with the census for this period.

On 14 Mar 1791, just two months after his marriage, John sells
his 260 acre, North Carolina land grant (#1794): 125 acres to Paul Dumer [DBK 12, p. 544] and 135 acres to John Avery [DBK 12, p. 542].

    Then on 28 Jan 1792 [DBK 14, p. 469 or 569] John purchased his
second tract of land in North Carolina —177‘/2 acres from Peter Workman. This land was located on Hamby's Creek. Here John and his family evidently lived for a couple of years. One son, Henry (c1794) was b. in North Carolina. However, his older sister, Anna Maria, who was b. 31 May 1792, could have been born either in Virginia or North Carolina? We do know she was baptized on 27 Jul 1793, at the Pilgrim Reformed Church near Lexington, North Carolina where her grandfather, Wooldrich was buried. Her parents, John Fritz and wife, Anna Marie, were her sponsors. In German the name Mary is written Maria, and in church records we found it was quite often processed by the name Anna.

Records in North Carolina indicate that John sold his 177‘/2
acres on Hainby‘s Creek to Jacob Bowers on 29 Sep 1796 [DBK 16,p. 145] and as far as we know, he did not live in North Carolina again.

John and Mary's third child, Barbara, listed her place of birth as Virginia, and since she was born 15 Jun 1796, it is possible that John had left the State of North Carolina before the selling of the 1771/2 acres.

John and Mary’s family have five children listed by name but
from census records we strongly feel that there were five more
children born but we have no concrete proof as to who they were.

After leaving North Carolina, the family traveled to
Rockingham Co., VA where they lived in the area of the Tenth
Legion probably until 1810. John and Mary purchased two tracts
of land in this area. We have found that Rockingham County land records were destroyed by a fire at some date and re—recorded "from the original deeds in 1884" by act of Assembly. This would indicate that perhaps they were not a total loss. In the Rockingham County, August 1810 Court, John Fritz and wife, Mary, sell two pieces of land [DBK0000,pp. 538-540]both to Andrew Spitzer. One for 17 acres and the other for 39 acres. The 39 acres was originally granted by the state of Virginia to a John Depo? in 1792. We have not located the deeds that indicate when John and Mary purchased this land. Federal census for 1810 show that John and family were living in Harrisonburg, Rockingham Co., VA.

What drew John to Rockingham Co. can only be speculated.
It is my (G.A. Fritts) belief that it was either family ties with the Beaver's or the Fritts's, and only time will provide us with a chance to investigate. John moved his family into Lee Co., VA in the of fall 1810, where he would live except for a five year trip to Indiana, until his death.

Lee County is the State of Virginia’s furthest western
county—the very tip of the state. It is deep in the Allegheny
Range. Cumberland Mountain is its western boundary. At the
lower end of Cumberland Mountain lies Cumberland Gap, a very
important landmark in American History. Do not be deceived into thinking that just because Lee County is in Virginia that it was settled and peaceful. This county is on the Kentucky border, closer to Boonesborough than to Richmond. It was formed in 1792 from the western part of Russell County—parts of Scott and Wise counties were taken from Lee County in 1815 and 1856. Lee County was named for "Light Horse" Harry Lee of Revolutionary War fame.

John settled on Wallen's Creek, a tributary to the Powell River, and lived on Wallen‘s Ridge. Over the years, John purchased and sold several tracts of land in Lee County. The earliest record was on 28 Sep 1805, when he purchased 100 acres of land lying on the north side of Waltons Ridge from Byron Breeding and his wife, Jane, [DBK 2, p. 78]. Half of this land was to remain in John's possession for better than thirty years until he sold it to his son John, Jr. who stated:
"that he had a deed from his father", however, no deed was found when he, John Jr., sold it and two other parcels of land on 18 Dec 1848, to Birdine Wygal of Pulaski Co., VA; the Wygal heirs are reported to still own the property. The land that John Sr. owned, contained a cemetery—believed to be the "OLD FRITTS FARM" cemetery, where John Sr. was buried. It is located "high on a windy hill" at the very top, some 210 feet above Hurricane Branch Creek.

His son, George (1807) had purchased, on 8 Mar 1828, the other half of the original farm [DBK 6, p. 11] from his father and sold it on 23 Aug 1829. to Thompson Edwards [DBK6, p. 121].
As it has been written, John Sr. and family were in Rockingham
Co., VA in the 1810 census. We also are aware that he owned 100 acres in Lee Co., VA from 1805, where he was maintained on their tax list.

I, (GA. Fritts) believe that John Sr. and family moved to Lee
Co., in In fall of 1810. There on 21 Dec 1810, John Sr. cashed in his 50 acres of Virginia land preemption warrant (#1750), dated 10 May 1782, having the 50 acres surveyed [SBK 1, p. 416] right next to the 100 acres that he had purchased in Sep 1805.

John, Sr. like others of his time — was a farmer, and from the
land transactions he did well in making a living for his family. He obtained five additional tracts of land while in Lee Co. Only one would record his wife, Mary's signature that was on 2 Aug 1816, when he bought 97 acres from Benjamin Sharp and his wife, Hannah, [DBK 3, p. 212].

In the 1830 census, John Sr. and Mary were in Lee Co., VA.
Mary was older than John Sr. by at least two or three years, being born between 1750 and 31 Dec 1759. The exact date of her death is unknown, probably in early 1830's in Virginia. John Sr. was living alone in Monroe Co., IN, 1840 census, next door to his son, Henry (C1794).

John Sr. applied for his Revolutionary War pension [#S10701] on 27 May 1834, in Hawkins Co., TN, instead of Lee Co., VA where he lived because it was more convenient. In applying for the pension he stated: "I have lived in North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia since the Revolutionary War." However, we have found no record of his living in Tennessee.

On 6 Nov 1837, John Sr. applied for transfer of his pension to
Monroe Co., IN where he was living. John Sr. returned to Lee Co., VA in the fall of 1842 and applied for his pension to be transferred back to Virginia in Apr 1843. John Sr. died in 1847-1848 time frame, about eight-five years of age.

His great-great-granddaughter, Hattie Muncy Bales, would write
in years to come that he "was buried on the old Fritts farm. A few years ago there was a rough stone marking the grave but it is no longer in evidence."

In John Sr.’s pension file there was a letter from West Liberty, KY, dated 26 January 1859, to the War Department from a S.R. Fritts stating: "that my grandmother is still living and claims her pension."

This woman, I, (G.A. Fritts) believe is not our Mary (Beaver) Fritts, but rather Elizabeth (Sipe) M, and as of this time we have not determined who her husband was. Elizabeth was in the Lee Co., VA, 1850 census [Dist. #31, p. 72], age ninety years, living with a Samuel Fitts, his wife and family. We have no knowledge of whose family or where Samuel R. Fitts connects! The name “Fitts” is an Americanized form of the English name “Fitz”. We are aware that Susannah Fitts and her son Cornelius lived near our Fritts’s Lee Co., VA.

John married Beaver, Mary in Jan 1791. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

The Fritts (Fritz) families are of Germanic ancestry. Greg Fritts, of Toledo, Ohio, has written a comprehensive 550-page book Fritts Family Heritage on the Fritts families of the US and includes the Roane County branches of the family. Henry Fritts (1770) mentioned above, who settled on Paw Paw Creek had the following children:

    John (1792-1893) mar (1819) Milly R. Montgomery
    Christiana (1794-99)
George (abt 1796) mar first (1825) Ulsey Blevin, and 2nd (1839) Sarah Spoon
Jacob (1800-1878) mar (1818) Sarah Sexton
    Peter (1801-1883) mar (1825) Parmelia J. Williams
    Phillip (1803-1864) mar (1830) Frances J. Williams
David (1804-1865) mar (1829) Catherine Cook
    Catherine (1809)
    J. Henry (1813-aft. 1880) mar (1831) Mary Ann Williams
    Isaac (1816-1892) mar Fannie Fortner

Henry Fritts married secondly (1835) Patsey Liles and they had two sons:

    Jeremiah (1836-1909)
Ransom (1839-1912) mar Nancy J. Powell

Henry was married three times. By his first wife he had 10 children by his second wife he had two sons and by his third wife he had no children.

On 27 Nov 1974, your compilers met personally for the first
time, with Harry G. and Larry S. Fritts, at the home of Larry in Bellbrook, Ohio. At that time they presented us
with their theory that Henry Fritts of Roane County, Tennessee was the son of Wooldrich Fritz of North Carolina. Since that time we have worked at proving or disproving that theory. We, of course, would like very much to obtain a family Bible or Will of Henry Fritts (c1770). But this has not proven to be possible. In Jan 1979, Harry and Larry came to our home and we presented to them, through the use of land, census, marriage, and other court records, what we felt was enough proof to their theory to place it in print they agreed.

We wish at this time to thank them on behalf of all the
descendants of Henry (c1770) for their theory, their trust in sharing it with us, and their continued help and support.

    HENRY’S YEARS IN
    ROWAN (NOWDAVIDSON) Co., NC

‘H’ HENRY FRITTS, third known son of Wooldrich (Frederick) and Janet Fritz (1731), b. c1770, near Lexington, Rowan (now Davidson) Co., North Carolina where the census place his birth at c1771, but other court records place his birth in c1770.

Not much is known about Henry's early years until after his
father was murdered in 1781. We learn that on “Tuesday, 4
February 1783, at the age of thirteen years, Henry Fritz, orphan son of Wooldrich Fritz, is bound out to Valentine Day, a farmer, till he attains the age of twenty—one years. The said master to comply with the act of assembly and give said apprentice fifteen specie at expiration of his time.”

Henry attained the age of 21y in c1791 or 1792, at which time he married, but his first wife's name is unknown. By the use of court and census records we are able to trace Henry from 1783 until after 1840.

Henry (c1770) obtained a land grant, from the State of North
Carolina —No. 2209: “To all these presents shall come...for and in consideration of the sum of Ten Pounds for every 100 acres...paid by Henry Fritz...a tract of land containing 350 acres, lying and being in Rowan County on the waters of “Abbets” Creek...Beginning at a stake on John Lopp’s comer...on Phillip Leonard’s line...on Abraham Beanblossom’s line...dated 27 Nov 1793—18th year of our independence...”

Henry sold this land to Andrew Lopp, no deed has been
located and the date of sale is not known. In the fall of 1809, Andrew Lopp sells this 350 acres to John Waggoner—both men are living in Bedford Co., TN. One month later 6 Nov 1809, John Waggoner sells the 350 acres to Jacob Waggoner of Rowan Co., NC. Then on 6 Jan 1812, Jacob Waggoner sells it to Peter Everhart.

HENRY’S YEARS IN LINCOLN Co., NC

Just when Henry (c1770) traveled to Lincoln Co., NC is not
clear but the time frame of 1792-1793 is logical.

Why he traveled to Lincoln Co., since he already had land in
Rowan Co., can only be presumably for more open spaces. Henry (C1770) obtained a patent (grant) of two hundred acres in Lincoln Co., located on Buffalo Creek and recorded 26 Nov 1793, just one day before the Rowan Co. grant was recorded. This fact leads us to believe he obtained the Rowan Co. land in late 1791 or earlier with the recording not occurring until the end of 1793. However, they had moved west to Lincoln Co., probably in the fall of 1792 or l793—the moving usually occurred in the fall when the years harvesting was done.

NOTE: In the early years most all grants were recorded on a
given day in one area, thus, Henry obtained a grant in Rowan and Lincoln Cos., NC just one day apart. The key word is “Recorded” when Henry settled on the land can only be speculated.

During the eighteen years that the Fritts family lived in Lincoln Co., Henry obtained the above 200 acre grant in 1793; purchased 21 acres on Lyles' Creek on 10 Jan 1800; purchased 64 acres on Indian Creek on 19 Feb 1800 from Abraham Baker and purchased 92 acres on the Chinapin Branch of the Indian Creek on 26 Jul 1803.

Henry sold on 8 Apr 1799, 85 acres more or less to Robert
Glenn and he sold 130 acres on 28 Nov 1810 to Christian Brinkle. The family then probably started the move to Roane Co., TN.

Between the years 1782 to 1841, Lincoln Co. included all of
the present-day Gaston and Catawba Cos., plus the eastern half of Cleveland Co. The Leonard’s, Brinkley’s and Hinkle’s were among some of the families who moved to Lincoln Co. from Rowan Co.

During the Rowan Co., NC 1790 census, Henry (c1770) was a
member of the Valentine Day household. Then in 1810, Lincoln
Co., NC census (p. 337) we find our Henry, his wife, two daus., and six sons. By comparing these census of numbers, with later census we found the children to be: (1) John, b. 1792; (2) George, b. 1794-1798; (3) Christina, possible b. 19 Apr 1799; (4) Jacob, b. 1800; (5) Peter, b. 1801; (6) Phillip, b. 1803; (7) David, b. 1804; and (8) Catherine “Katie”, b. 1809. Also in the 1810 census was one loom that had woven 200 yards of cloth.

HENRY’S YEARS IN ROANE Co., TN

In 1811, Henry purchased one hundred and sixty-one acres of
land, more or less, in Roane Co., TN. This land was described as being between the Clinch River and Buttermilk Road on or near Paw Paw Creek within what is now the boundaries of Oak Ridge, TN. This land was purchased on 4 Jul 1811, from Thomas C. Clark, according to the deed and not recorded until some nine and one-half years later in 1821.

Many unusual antidotes are found within the early estate
sales....Marilyn N. McCluen, historian in Roane Co., TN
discovered where the “Estate Sales of a man’s personal effect” after his death, was quite a “Cocktail Party”. She encountered in her searches where one man was paid (reimbursed) $7.50, he spent for whiskey he bought to hold a sale. Whiskey was selling at twenty-five cents A GALLON at the time. This meant he bought thirty gallons of whiskey. The whole county must have been at that sale.

Daniel P. Atwood, Patti’s cousin, wrote the following on 6
Mar 1979, in Salt Lake City, UT. He was a genealogical genius and extremely good at deciphering land deeds and etc. Dan did a great deal of research for Greg and Patti Fritts in Tennessee and we are putting the following letter in just as he wrote it—along with his humorous and serious sides. We do not state that the following is completely accrue, for perhaps others, in later years will find some part the description in error, but we doubt it!

“When, in 1847, JOSIAH PATTY, “...in pursuance of the
law of the State of Tennessee relative to the establishing of the boundaries of land...surveyed for Peter Fritts One Hundred and Ninety-One acres...”, he conveyed to Peter NO land that was not already his. He merely surveyed more accurately Henry’s original purchase of 1811 from Thomas Clark for $135, which had previously been described only by a rough estimation of distance and directions of lines, or as result of a previous very superficial and in accurate “survey”.

It probably also was intended to establish and accurately set off the “30-acres” “supposedly” sold by Reuben Williams to Daniel Grubb.

Have superimposed the lines described in the 1847 survey as a THIN line, upon the lines as described in the 1811 deed as a THICK line. What should be realized is that the THIN and THICK lines, in reality, are EXACTLY the SAME lines and that the THICK line only appears to be at a different place only because the measurements and directions given in the 1811 deed were not accurate. (That is, the part of the THIN and THICK lines from Pickle’s (double—) walnut corner clockwise to the post oak at ye old tanyard are the SAME line. From there, the THIN line is a NEW boundary, setting off Daniel Grubb’s 30-acres.) The survey says the land to the west of
Henry’s land was that of William Grubb (heir possible to Daniel, and thus the “30” acres was merely ADDED to an already existing farm, probably).

The two acre (approximately) “diamond” shaped tract cornering at ye old tanyard was also wholly included in Henry’s land as of 1811, and NOT included in the 30-acres sold to Grubb. A “branch” (unnamed) whether of Papaw Creek or of the Clinch, crossed the “two”—acre“diamond”.

The “161-acre deed to Henry as originally described would
have contained only abt. 147-acres, but I was wrong in my estimate that the re-survey of this land FOR Peter, after the “30” acres was taken away didn’t seem to be more that 150 acres. Figured several times the survey as described and it came out to between 190.5 and 192 acres.

A chain is FOUR poles or rods. If so, the area would figure to abt. 564 acres. Obviously “Patty” was very INDEPENDENT and chose to buck the rest of mankind and used a TWO pole “CHAIN”. But what would you expect of a fellow who couldn’t even spell “Patti” right? Ha Ha! (Here his referring to his cousin Patti Fritts, spelling of her name.)

The survey was “witnessed” presumably by the “chain bearers” (usual witnesses) John Fritts and William Lutterell.

LONG BEFORE the re-survey, the estate of Jacob Syler sued
Reuben Williams for slightly over $100 owed Jacob Syler, and the judgement was levied against this land. At Sheriff sale 4 Oct 1828, William S. McEwen bid it in for $43 (far less than it was worth) and on 14 Apr 1832, on McEwen’s order, was deeded to Peter Fritts, by the Sheriff.

Why the Estate of Jacob Syler, who already had the debt of
some $100 “invested” in it, didn’t bid it in for something up to $100, which would have cost them NOTHING but the $10.00 added cost of sale, to force the bidding over $100 so they would get their full money back, is not known.

I suspect there was a lot of behind the scene friendly finagling going on, in which maybe other unrecorded money changed hands, all quite properly, designed to see that the land got back into the hands of Henry’s family, where it was felt it “rightfully” belonged. Reuben Williams seems obviously an in-law of Peter, who, I would guess may have been son-in-law of Robert, Reuben’s (heir?).

These old Roane-ians, like many old timers, and even more so
today, like God, “moved in mysterious ways their wonders of
    perform”.

Five years AFTER the re-survey, 25 Oct 1852, Peter sold to
Landon R. Tuder for $400, land described in the terms of Henry’s 1811 deed less the unidentified “30-acres”, and with only the addition of “adjoining the Lands of William Grubb, George Pickel and others” added, and called only 100 acres more or less.

Why the Q1 land description is used, who knows? Peter probably didn’t have the survey description in his possession, and just copied the OLD description in Peter’s possession rather than go to Kingston to copy the survey description in the recorder’s office.

On 1 Oct 1860, Landon R. Tuder sold to William H. Pickel for
$800, Q acres, using the survey description of the land, plus the line from the Peter to Tuder deed: “adjoining the Lands of William M. Grubb, George Pickel and others”. It deviates from the Survey description at the “post oak at the corner of the old tanyard”, by omitting the abt. two-acre diamond at the tanyard and running directly from there to the (double) walnut at the beginning by a line now only 43 chains (86 poles), 7.4 rods shorter than final line of the
    survey.

These old Roane-ians were very careless about accuracy, or
    accounting for differences.”

In the early 1980’s Marilyn McC1uen told Greg about a Land
Road Book kept in the large walk-in safe [the size of a small room] at the Courthouse. For three years he traveled from Ohio to Tennessee several times and spent days going through every book in that safe, trying to find the book. It was not there and to say he was disappointed is an understatement!

As Greg was leaving the safe, for the last time, he looked into the land records office and there on the top shelf was the book he had been looking for—all his time was rewarded.

The following documents refer to Henry Fritts (1813), son of
    the above:

Feb. 1852: Ordered by the Court that Henry Fritts, Jr., be Overseer of a 2nd class road Beginning at the fork after road leading to Lackeys and to opposite the double first trap and that the hands living in the following county do work therein lives, Beginning at L. This description would appear to be Henry Fritts (1813), the son. This land description for roadwork was also listed March 1852.

While Henry (c1770) was in Roane Co., TN, two more sons were born to him and his first wife: (9) Henry, b. 1813; and (10) Isaac, b. 1816.

In the early 1830's, Henry's wife of some forty years evidently passed away in Roane Co., TN and was bur. near by, location not known. She was the mother of ten children that lived and possible some that died at or soon after birth or as young children.

Henry md. (2) Patsey Liles (Lyles) on 6 Mar 1835, Roane Co.,
TN, with John Brown putting up surety. The license itself is
missing. It is believed that Patsey was b. C1801 and was c34y when she married and Henry would have been c65y at the time of this marriage. If Patsey was age 34y had she been md. before? This was rather old to become a first time bride in those days! By the time Henry was 70y he had father two more sons: (11) Jeremiah, b. 1836; and, (12) Ransom, b. 1839. Patsey evidently died at or shortly after Ransom's birth and their Aunt Catherine “Katie” raised him and his brother, Jeremiah.

Henry, md. (3) Ann Tumbull on 5 Mar 1840, surety by Reuben
Cook, obtained on 3 Mar 1840 and the marriage performed by B.C. Kimbrell, JP on the 5th. shortly after this we lose track of Henry and his wife.

We know that Henry was alive in the Roane Co., TN 1840
census, age 60—70y,b. C1770 and his wife Ann was age 40—50y,b. c1790-1800 and he was still living on 18 Mar 1842 when Moore Matlock wrote his Last Will and Testament giving to his son, John, when he becomes of age, “the tract of land whereon Henry Fritts NOW lives.” Henry Fritts (c1770) died after 18 Mar 1842 when Moore Matlock wrote his will and before the February 1851 roadwork documents recorded the statement “...land where old man Fritts LIVED on Big Emery”.

Valentine Day was German and the German people had a love
for their native language and for keeping to themselves Henry (c1770) was raised in this old school of thought. He spoke German, worked his farm, raised his family, attended church, and did not get involved in business or government affairs. However, his children were more involved with the outside world.

Henry's final resting—place, was probably the Pleasant Hills
Bapt. Church Cem., Eaton’s Cross Roads, Loudon Co., TN, as were many of the Fritts members. This cemetery was part of Roane Co., until 1870 when Loudon was formed and was located near the Matlock land, where Henry lived. John L. Fritts (1884) told Greg that he had attended Henry Fritts (1813)’s funeral at this Cem. There is no stone to mark either Henry, Sr. or Jr.’s, final resting places.

The children of Henry Fritts (c1770) started the migration west to Crittenden Co., KY, Maries Co., MO and Texas in the early 1850’s.

    GEOGRAPHICAL AND HISTORICAL
    BACKGROUND OF THE FRITTS FAMILIES
    IN ROANE COUNTY, TENNESSEE
    By Snyder E. Roberts, 4 Apr 1979.

The pioneer Fritts families emigrated from North Caroline and settled in Roane County, Tennessee about 20 miles up the meanders of Clinch River, or approximately 8 air miles, from the town of Kingston. The home site purchased was in an area of considerable historical significance, and their early neighboring families produced leaders in various fields of endeavor.

A deed of conveyance from Thomas C. Clark in 1811 to Henry
Fritts for 161 acres describes the land as being between Clinch River and Buttermilk Road on, or near, Paw Paw Creek. T.V.A. maps show the Indian town of Paw Paw to have been located in a huge bend in Clinch River at a point across the river and slightly down stream from the Fritts farm. Upstream in Clinch River from the mouth of Paw Paw Creek was a sizeable island that has been owned by various individuals including: Matthew Nail, Reuben Williams, John Jones, and John B. Waller. Later the backwaters from T.V.A.’s Watts Bar Lake covered the island.

The Buttermilk Road was either a segment of, or parallel to,
the Great Stage Road built from Campbell Station in Knox County to Kingston in the 1790's. When high waters threatened at the confluence of the Tennessee and Clinch Rivers, and the confluence of the Emory River and the Clinch River at Kingston, travelers would by-pass the high water problems by leaving Buttermilk Road and crossing at Paw Paw Ford in Clinch River at a point below the large river island. The traveler would proceed by, or near, the
present site of the K-25 Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plant to the old Emory Road as it passed through the historical Clox Gap in Pine Ridge. From Clox Gap, the traveler would pass on to either the Little Emory River on his route to Kentucky, or to the Big Emory River on his way to Nashville.

The area mentioned above as being the site of an Indian town
in a big bend in Clinch River is today the construction site for the famous, controversial, multi-billion dollar Atomic Breeder Reactor Plant which is in the restricted Oak Ridge Project area, and within about 2 air miles of the now famous Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plant. Buttermilk Road runs parallel with the present-day interstate highway I-40 between Knoxville and Kingston. The area along Paw Paw Creek grew into a community called Paw Paw Plaines. The Macedonia Church in the area has a graveyard, and a large Waller graveyard is located near the river. The Paw Paw School was a part of the Roane County School System.

As noted above, the Henry Fritts tract was bought from
Thomas C. Clark who was a very wealthy Kingston lawyer and
businessman. In 1795, Stockley Donelson, land speculator and
brother—in-law of Andrew Jackson, received a grant from the State of North Carolina for 50,000 acres of land between the Tennessee and Clinch Rivers beginning at the confluence and extending up the rivers. In 3 or 4 years, the Sheriff of Knox County sold the tract to the highest bidder because of Donelson‘s failure to pay the taxes on it. It was bought by 3 individuals who either sold it to John Smith T., or Donelson had redeemed the property and sold it to John
Smith T. There were other problems with the ownership of the tract such as: clearing Indian title, etc. John Smith T. (he had added the T. to distinguish himself from all other John Smiths, fought off all challenges to his property, and in the process was alleged to have added 9 notches to his pistol handle. Along with his other trouble, John Smith T. became dissatisfied with the influx of new settlers and his lack of elbowroom, and he decided to sell the remainder of
his property and to remove to Missouri. He sold most of the residue of his large tract to the wealthy Thomas C. Clark who sold 161 acres to Henry Fritts in 1811.

Neighboring families to the Fritts on Clinch included: The
Wailers, who produced outstanding medical Doctors; Pickels, were well represented in the teaching profession, the Rayburns, were inclined to law, and produced the famous Samuel Rayburn, who established records as Speaker in the House of Representatives in the U.S. Congress; the Arnolds, are well represented in the teaching and insurance business; and the Eblens, have produced prominent lawyers and judges.

From their early settlement on the Clinch River, the Fritts
families spread to other areas of Roane County, to surrounding counties, and to the four winds. In brief, the Fritts’ have made names for themselves as: preachers, doctors, teachers, musicians, craftsmen, and in the mining industry.

    “Yesterday is history,
    tomorrow is a mystery,
    today is a gift:
that is why they call it
    “The Present”.

    Settle On Clinch-Paw Paw Creek

The pioneer Henry Fritts family came from North Carolina and settled in Roane County about 20 miles up the meanders of Clinch River, or approximately 8 air miles from the town of Kingston. The original home site purchased was in the area of considerable historical significance, and their early neighboring families produced leaders in various fields of endeavor.

The deed of conveyance from Thomas N. Clark to Henry Fritts describes the land as being between Clinch River and Buttermilk Road on, or near Paw Paw Creek. This creek flows into the Clinch at a point below an island of approximately 30 acres which was owned at various times by Matthew Nail, Reubin Williams, John Jones, John B. Waller and others. Later the island was covered by the backwaters of Watts Bar Lake.

    Historical Location

The Buttermilk Road was either a segment or, or a road parallel to, the Great Stage Road from Campbell Station in Knox County to Kingston in Roane County. When high waters threatened at the confluence of the Tennessee and Clinch Rivers at Kingston, travelers would by-pass the flood problems by leaving Buttermilk Road and crossing the Clinch ay Paw Paw Ford at a point below the large island. The travelers would proceed by, or near, the present site of the K-25 Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plant to Old Emery Road as it passed through the historical Clack's gap in Pine Ridge. From Clack's gap, the travelers would pass on to either Little Emery River and through the DeArmond's Gap in Waldens Ridge on their way to Kentucky, or to Big Emery Gap in Ridge(at Harriman) and turn left to Crab Orchard on their way to Nashville.

    Paw Paw Plains

Early neighboring families of the Fritts in the Paw Paw area included: Waller, Pickel, Rayburn, Montgomery, Eblen, Williams, Haggard, Casner, Grubb, Burk and Matlock. The community grew and was known as Paw Paw Plains. Paw Paw Ford was approximately 4 miles from Wheat on the Waller's Ferry Road leading to Lenoir City. The Indian town of Paw Paw and the Clinch River Breeder Reactor Plant site will be discussed later.

She gave mother a counterpane, had turkey red in it. ...“ She was probably in her mid 90's if born about 1767? and Mr. D. T. was age 4 or 5y.

He died 24 February 1841 and was buried at the Pilgrim Reformed Church Cemetery near Lexington, Davidson County, North Carolina. John was married about 1806 to Rebecca Younts. She was born 19 September 1785 in North Carolina. Her Will was dated 10 May 1846 and she died sometime after 1850. According to her Will, son, John Jr. (1813) was to get the use of the blacksmith tools of his father. John Jr. died in 1854, and the tools probably went to Hiram or Amos. John (1780) was a farmer and blacksmith. At the time of his death 281½ acres were divided among his ten children. All of the children were born in North Carolina. We found in the War of 1812 Muster Rolls for North Carolina two Johns. One served in the Rowan County Fourth Regiment - #36 John Frits. The other served in Burke County Second Regiment - #45 John Fritt, they are possibly the same man.

PHILLIP FRITTS, son of Henry Fritts (c1770) and his first wife, b. 10 Jan 1803, Lincoln Co., NC; d. 31 May 1864, age
61y 4m 1d, Maries Co., MO, bur. Walker Cem., near Vichy, Maries Co., MO, as was his wife, Frances, 20y later; Ind. Frances Jane Williams on 15 Dec 1830 (date of bond), Roane Co., TN, with his brother Peter Fritts providing the surety. Frances Jane was b. 16 May 1813, Virginia (according to 1850 Roane Co., TN and 1860 Maries Co., MO censuses). She d. 3 Jul 1884, age 71y 3m 18d, according to her tombstone. They had twelve children—nine born in Roane Co., TN and three born in Maries Co., MO.

Phillip wrote his will on 27 May 1864, just four days before he died. He made small bequests to the following children: Phillip Ballard Fritts...when he attains the age of 21 years, Marion F. Fritts, Amanda Lee Fritts, Arletha Fritts, Mary Ann Bradshaw, Armelia Jane Love, Nancy Ann Fritts, Robert W. Fritts, Peter B. Fritts and son Samuel S. Fritts at his death...Remained of estate to wife Frances Fritts. Executor: William S. Pannell (Pinnel).

Witnesses: Jacob Moreland and G.W. Shinkle, both of Lanes
Prairie. Codicil—including a description of land in Phelps Co., with the same date and witnesses. Also, renaming daus., Mary Ann Bradshaw, Permelia Jane Love, Nancy Ann Fritts, Addia
Frances Fritts, Arletha Paris Fritts and Amanda Lee Fritts. On
30 Mar 1872, eight years after it was written the will was official recorded.

[The above will listed “Peter B.” it should have read Peter M., Samuel S. should have read Samuel I_..And Samuel had been dead some two years when his father wrote his will. In the first part of the will five daus. were listed leaving Frances out. In the Codicil the six daus. were listed. ..PAF]

    Frances obtained a mother’s pension (#304,751, dated 21 May
1883) from her son Samuel who died while in service during the
Civil War. Witnesses were listed as William R. Fritts and F.M.
    Harrison.

While in Tennessee on 26 Jan 1839, nine years after Phillip
marriage he purchased a tract of land from George Cook, Jr., paying $400. George, Jr. received this land from his father George Cook, Sr. at his death. The land was registered on 7 May 1849 and witnessed by Robert Williams. The land was located on Sinking Cave Creek on the Clinch River, Roane Co., TN and this was were Phillip as a farmer raised his family.

In preparation for his move to Lanes Prairie, Maries Co., MO,
Phillip sold on 21 Sep 1851, the above tract of land to Edward
Munger. It was registered on 19 Apr 1855. The move in the fall of 1851 took about six to eight weeks by covered wagon and they arrived in Maries Co. by Nov 1851.

Mack Raymond Fritts wrote in 1965: “about his great randfather, Philip Fritts, using only one “I”. Philip Fritts came from PA in 1857 [Not correct he came from TN in 1851] and settled in Maries Co., on the same farm grandfather Phillip Ballard Fritts lived on. Grandpa was the youngest one in the family. Great Grandpa, or Philip Fritts (1803), died at the young age of 61y. He was bur. Walker Cem., located on the old Walker farm, one mile west of Grandpa's home. The farm was “homesteaded” and the deed was signed by the President of the U.S. Up to now—l965—there have been only three owners—only one (the last) was not of the Fritts name.

Wanda (Steinhoff) King and her sister Delma (Steinhoff) Sampson took a trip from their home in KS to Vichy, Maries Co., M0, the home of their ancestors. Where they visited the Hickory Grove Cem. where they saw many familiar family names such as Love, Copeland and Bradshaw. The Fritts plot had an iron picket fence and gate around the graves. Wanda could not get the gate open, so she climbed over the fence. The fence originally was meant to fence turkeys out.

In the plot were six stones. There were very old and on two she was unable to read anything on them. On another it stated Mother and nothing more that she could read. The other two she thought were Dr. Otto Fritts’ parents Eliza Ellen Fritts, May 4, 1900, 54y 6m 4d. The records for Volume I of the Fritts Heritage had Ella Eliza, b 30 Aug 1843 and d. 4 May 1900, so Wanda feel sure this was Dr. Otto’s mother. The last one said Frank Fritts, d. June 14, 1902, this was the first born child of Dr. Otto Fritts and his wife. Frank d. before he was a year old.

    Notes:

    Name:
CAPT. GEORGE FRITTS, son of John (1780) and Rebecca (Younts) Fritts, born 23 January 1807, in North Carolina. George's tombstone lists him as a Captain, how or why the title we do not know. Capt. George died when still a very young man at the age of 37y-2m-21d on 13 April 1844. He was buried at the Jersey Baptist Church Cemetery near Linwood, Davidson County, North Carolina. Jacob Long was appointed Administrator of George's estate in August, 1844. Elizabeth Fritts applied for "one years support as the widow of George Fritts on 17 August 1844." George was married sometime in the early 1830's to (we believe) Elizabeth Long. At the time of his death he had five daughters, who were all listed by name in their Grandmother Rebecca Fritts's Will. George's wife, Elizabeth, was, we feel, the daughter of Jacob and Barbara (Lopp) Long. Elizabeth was born @12 December 1814 in North Carolina. She died 21 November 1890 at age 76y-11m-9d. She was buried next to her first husband Capt. George Fritts, at Jersey Baptist Church Cemetery, as are her parents and also one daughter, Susan (Fritts) Hix. Elizabeth then married John Cornelison, Jr. 25 March 1846 (date of bond), in David- son County, North Carolina. He was appointed guardian of George's five daughters in August 1846. John was born @1813 in North Carolina and died sometime after 1860. John and Elizabeth had five children and in the 1860 census he is listed as a farmer with his real estate value at $1200.00 and personal estate valued at $1400.00.

Isham FRITTS, aged 73, father of Henry W., B.F. and Willie FRITTS and Mrs. T.A. ROBERTS, died yesterday morning at the residence of Henry W. FRITTS, No. 243 Harrison avenue, of a complication of diseases arising from dropsy. The deceased had been quite ill for several weeks and his life had been despaired of for days. Mr. FRITTS was taken ill in Kingston several months ago. It is thought two weeks ago that his death would be but a matter of a few hours, and his family was summoned to his bedside. However, he rallied, and his sons had him brought to this city, so that he could receive the best of medical attention. For several days after his arrival in the city he began to sink rapidly, and to all it was evident that the end was near at hand. The deceased had lived in East Tennessee for many years and was exceptionally well known. The funeral services will be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock from the residence of Henry W. FRITTS, Revs. W.D HAYMORE and J.P. McFERRIN officiating. The interment will be made in Forest Hills cemetery. The pallbearer will be F.M. GARDENHIRE, E. M. DODSON, C.S. PEAK, W.R. PHILLIPS, John H. Notes:

ISHAM G. “ISOM” FRITTS, son of Jacob and Sarah
(Sexton) Fritts (1800), b. 12 Jul 1820, Roane Co., TN; d. 1 Dec 1893; md. Elizabeth Melcinna Jordon on 8 Sep 1839, by A. McAlister, JP, Monroe Co., TN. Elizabeth was b. C1823, TN. It is possible that her father was Thomas Jordon who d. before 1846. Her mother was Lucinda (_?_), who was b. 1776, VA. Lucinda was located in Isham’s household, age 84y.

According to the Mar 1846 Chancery Court at Madisonville, TN,
record #226 “John Avans, Adm. of Thomas Jourden, dec’d, VS
Anderson and Wily Jouden, Dialtha Wayne, William T. Jourden,
Elizabeth and Isham Frits, heirs.” Elizabeth appears to of had one sister and three brothers living at the time of her father’s death.

It has been recorded that Lucy Whittler was the wife of Thomas
Jordon and mother of Elizabeth who md. Isham. Lucy and Lucinda
may be the same person and Whittler may have been her maiden
    name.

Isham, whose name has been spelled several ways including
Isom and Isham of which we will use the later was a farmer,
saloonkeeper, and dealer in real estate, in and around Kingston, TN where he sold and traded property.

Isham and his family seem to have been the “Bert Lances” of
Kingston with promissory notes going and coming in all directions. They were making contracts to deliver title to fractions of half-acre lots in Kingston being paid for by notes, while they were buying these lots with the notes. The catch was who payed off who’s notes first. While some of the fractional half-acre lots in Kingston were selling for over a thousand dollars, Isham had to mortgage one of his lots for
a $50 loan from of all people, the real, Hugh Martin, whom, we guess, may have been the builder of the steamboat the “Hugh Martin”—that killed Isham’s son, Jacob. One of the deeds was for the steamboat the “Emory City” (not to be confused with little Dorothy and her Emerald City) and the deed showed it was built in Kingston.

From Roane Co., TN deeds we might, romantically, refer to
them as the "Song of the Tennessee Boatman" involve three sons of Isham Fritts: Jacob, who on 31 Mar 1875, trades the “Emory City” to R.M. and Uriah Allison for the "Hugh Martin" and a note from the Allisons for $5,000; Tom W. Fritts, younger brother, who files an Inventory of the Estate of Jacob consisting of the wreck of the “Hugh Martin”, the balance of the $5,000 note, and a list of about 150 small payments owing to the “Hugh Martin”, and who later in Nov 1875 buys from the Allisons the “Emory City”, and, Wiley H. to whom Tom W. sells the “Emory City” early in 1876.

It was said by Mary Katherine (Fritts) Glover many years ago
that Isham and Elizabeth had nine children with two dying as infants. Thus we are placing a unnamed child between Benj and Matilda.

Isham married Jordan, Elizabeth Melinna on 8 Sep 1839 in Monroe County, Tennessee, USA. Elizabeth was born in 1828. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

    Name:
    Amanda Tennessee Fritts

Back when I was a little girl my parents would my brothers and myself to Oliver Springs to see "Grandmow", Grandmow scared me silly as she was so ancient to a 9 year old girl. She was so bent and fragile and she was talked to with great respect by my parents and even my grandparents, who, also called her "Grandmow".

was always sent out to plat after supper, but, oh how I wished I had stuck around to listen to Grandmow's stories. You see, Grandmow was Amanda Tennessee Fritts Vought. Amanda's daddy was Jeremiah Fritts and her grandfather was Henry Fritts. and his family came over the mountains from Rowan County, North Carolina about 1811. He had purchased about 161 acres of land in Roane County, This land was described as being between the Clinch River and Buttermilk Road, on or near Paw Paw Creek. Today it is in the boundries of Oak Ridge. It used to be known as "The Matlock Place". After Henry's move to Roane County, his first wife died and Henry remarried, This time to Patsey Liles. Patsey is the mother of my grandparent, Jeremiah and his brother Ransom Fritts. Patsey died soon after Ransom's birth, leaving Jeremiah and Ransom to be raised by their Aunt Catherine Fritts, a sister of Henry. Henry went on to marry a third time to Ann Turnbull. Jeremiah and Ransom married the Powell sisters. Sarah to Jeremiah and Nancy J to Ransom in a double ceremony. There marriage date is 17 Aug 1859. Both brothers fought in the Civil War in the Union Army, "D" Co., 5th Infantry. Both Brothers are listed as "Deserters". Amanda's explanation to the inevitable question to "What did your daddy do in the war?" was that Jeremiah farmed by night and hid himself and the animals in caves during the day. He decided that his family's well being was more important than off fighting and killing men. I have no record of Ransom after his desertion except that he appears on the 1880 census for Scott County, Tennessee. Amanda Tennessee Fritts was born May 20, 1877 in Copper Ridge (now Oak Ridge.) She was the 7th child of Jeremiah and Sarah Fritts and the family says that Amanda had "powers". She could devine water, could heal and had foresight. Amanda met Frank Henry Vought when he came on the homestead drifting and asked for work. Amanda said, "Papa gave him to choppin wood and he just kind of stayed around after that." Frank and Amanda were married on July 1, 1894 by J.T. Miller, JP in Roane County. Of that marriage my great grandmother was born. Her name was Dora Ann Vought, on Mar 18, 1898. Dora married John William Harmon. A cousin of sort since his father was James Harmon. James was raised by Silas T. Fritts. Willie's parents were James Harmon and Sarah Whitlock. Willie and Dora had 3 living children. My Grandfather, Sherman Franklin, a brother Roscole Monroe and a daughter, Clara. Dora died just after giving birth to a fourth child in 1924. Both are buried in Walnut Hill Cemetery. Sherman and his siblings were raised by Amanda and Frank. Willie died June of 1947. He rest besides Dora. Sherman married Ruby Irene Wright, daughter of Arthur Wright and Mary Alice Beason on September 2, 1933. Of that marriage my father, Edward Franklin, born Nov 1934, and his brother Leland Monroe, Born Dec 1936 and sister Clarise Irene, born Oct 1938 were born. Edward married Nancy Ann Baker on Jan 3, 1953 and I arrived in Aug. I was quickly followed by three brothers. Sherman Franklin, born Aug 1954, Robert Lawrence, born Jun 1956 and Scott Monroe, born May 1957. There are many more people to this tree than the ones I have mentioned. I've just given the direct line from there to here. There are many more lines that contribute to my DNA than just the Fritts. I have to give credit to the Wrights, the Frost, the Whitlocks, the Easters, and the Beasons. To these lines I am still searching and I think you for making me what I am.

But, to "Grandmow" I had to write this about her line just casuse I thought she deserved it. Amanda died in September, 1962 and is buried beside Frank in the South Harriman Cemetery.

He had a Bible that belonged to his father. He kept it in a paper bag with a string around the Bible itself as the Bible was falling to pieces. The middle section had births & marriages in it.* Arthur told Nancy Drozd that Lewis, Alvin, Emmer and himself are only ones still living in 1977. Emmer is still working at public work. Maude md. a Parish; Jane md. Bob Grubb. Arthur said that Lemmuel Lambeth d. 31 Oct 1947 of heart problems and broken hip. He had fallen off the porch while Arthur was plowing with the mules. He said the man never once complained of hurting. He told Arthur he was ok; but when Arthur reached to help pick him up, he couldn't stand on his legs and asked to be placed in the bed after his shoes and clothes were off. He wouldn't ear then or the next day as he said he just wasn't hungry. Arthur sent for the doctor. Doctor at first said he needed to go to the hospital, but later changed his mind when he felt his uneven heart beat and expressed that the man would probably not live to (reach] the hospital and would be very heart broken by leaving home. Two days after the fall, he died. Before he died, he asked for two biscuits in very sweet coffee and ate all of it. Then he asked for a glass of water and died peacefully. He is buried at Clarksbury Church. His wife died about 1 1/2 years later. She had a stroke and died in Apr 1949. Lemmuel was a farmer all year around. Raised vegetables & wheat. In winter, he would split logs by ax for the railroad. According to the Cemetery Records of Davidson Co., NC, Vol. 11, Southern Section, p. 216: Osborne Hunt Cemetery, located on left-hand side of Wright road south on called "Little hillside just past Hogg Branch (locally called "Little Uhwarrie"). It is across the road from the house that burned that belonged to Everett Lambeth on the property formerly owned by Osborne Hunt. A description of the cemetery's two graves with no markers are: "Many rocks piled up and briars growing on top of graves. Located in middle of cleared land and siteable from Wright Road. Arthur Lambeth said that Osbome Hunt and his wife were buried in the graves. Other people in the area agreed with Arthur. Osborne's daughter, Mary Hunt, married Lemmuel Lambeth.
